Chanakya National Law University is located in the ancient city of Patna, capital of Bihar, India. It was established under the Chanakya National Law University Act, 2006 (Bihar Act No. 24 of 2006) and included in section 2(f) of the U.G.C. Act, 1956.

The University aims at providing quality legal education and promoting legal awareness in the community at large in order to realise some of the goals envisaged in our Constitution. Moreover, there was felt a need for creating a ‘temple of learning’ in Bihar, the seat of the ancient Nalanda University and building on the cultural ethos of Bihar. Chanakya National Law University aims at realising these objectives. The University looks forward to raising national legal standards to international levels and will endeavour to further national interests by providing specialised teaching on latest trends in national and international law.

  • The total number of seats available for this course is 80. 20 of these seats are kept aside for foreign Nationals. They will be directly admitted on merit. However if seats remain vacant in this category these will be transferred to the general pool.
  • Other than the undergraduate program, CNLU also offers LLM as well as Post Graduate Diplomas in fields ranging from, Cyber Law & ADR to Intellectual Property Law.

Course Structure

At present the University has begun with the 5 year integrated undergraduate B.A., LL.B.(Hons.) course. This course has been designed to meet the current requirements of the Judiciary, the legal profession and the society at large. In today’s world of globalization and liberalization, a lawyer must not only possess excellent argumentative skills but must also be a good mediator and conciliator and play an important role in the development of the nation’s economy. This course aims at making the students analytical, critical and innovative. It seeks to inculcate in them a relevant and practical understanding and application of law.

Teaching Methodology

CNLU’s aim is to evolve and impart comprehensive legal education at all levels to achieve excellence, which can only be done through active learning through teacher-student interaction and internal and continuous assessment of students
