The dream for establishing a premier law school had been initiated as far back as the year 1992 but it became a reality only with the passing of the National Law University, Jodhpur Act in 1999. The founding fathers dreamt of an institution, which would not only cater to the requirements of the Bar but also fulfill the needs of newly liberalized trade, commerce and industry, simultaneously keeping the internationalization of the profession in perspective. It was resolved that the University shall develop a holistic approach towards understanding law and justice from a multi-disciplinary perspective. The institution started work with the blessings of many legal and social luminaries from 1st July, 2001.

Courses:

NLU, like the other top law schools in the country offers the integrated 5 year law program. The standard 5 year course however has certain draw backs, as it ignores the growing influence of science and technology in today's world. Taking these needs into consideration, NLU is one of the few universities that provide multidisciplinary undergraduate programs to meet this challenge.

The 5 year course is divided into 10 semesters, during which student will have to take 65 courses in order to attain one of the following degrees.

  • BA(Hons.) LLB (Hons.)
  • BSc(Hons.) LLB (Hons.)
  • BBA(Hons.) LLB (Hons)

The students shall be taught 34 compulsory law courses including the 17 mentioned by the Bar Council. There shall be in addition five clinical courses, four optional courses, and six courses for each Honors subject

Facilities:

Vice Chancellor Dr. N.L.Mitra was the director of National Law School of India University, Bangalore from 1998- 2001. Having steered NLSIU through its growth period Dr Mitra is keenly aware of the need for requisite infrastructure and has equipped NLU appropriately. The campus is 55 acres in size. The university has a well stocked and with Indian, English and American law reporters, as well as books covering a variety of subjects, including Information Technology, IPR, trade, economics, biotechnology and bioinformatics. All students are equipped with their own PCs or laptops and remain connected to the University Local Area Network to which even the library and academic blocks are attached. Internet connections are provided to all rooms. The University has also subscribed to national and international online libraries like Manupatra and Westlaw. In addition to this the University network is slowly being converted to a wireless network.
