Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala was established in year 2006 by Punjab Government (Punjab Act No. 12 of 2006) as a public university. The 1st vice-chancellor is Dr. Gurjit Singh. The establishment of RGNUL has fulfilled a dream of having a centre of excellence in legal education in Punjab.
Currently, University is functioning from its transit campus at Mahendra Kothi, Patiala. The process of acquiring land for the university is underway. Soon, the university will shift to its permanent location at village Sidhuwal on Bhadson road, Patiala.
The university is affiliated to UGC and approved by Bar Council of India.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible to appear for CLAT-2011, a candidate should have passed his/her Higher Secondary School/Intermediate Examination (10+2) or its equivalent examination with not less than 50% marks in aggregate (45% in case of SC/ST/OBC and persons with Disability)*. Age of candidate should not be more than 20 years in case of General/OBC candidates (22 years in case of SC/ST and persons with Disability)* as on 1st July, 2011

The candidature of the Punjab Resident Category shall be determined on submission of an affidavit and certificate as per the Punjab Government letter No. 1/3/95-3PPII/9619 dated 06.06.96 as amended vide the Punjab Government, Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms letter No. 11/3/95-3PP-II/80 dated 01.01.99.
Admission to the category of the 'Foreign Nationals' shall be the Direct Admission on the basis of inter-se-merit of the qualifying examination and the interview. These candidates are to apply through CLAT form directly to the Registrar, RGNUL.
Teaching Methodology
RGNUL, stands elevated not only because of its location and ambience, but because of the revolutionary changes that have been introduced in the curriculum, examination pattern, evaluation process and teaching methodology.
The teaching methodology entails both intensive and extensive class room teaching and participative learning. The students are confronted with real life problems and are trained to acquire analytical and logical skills. Therefore, teaching methodology involves lectures, discussions, case studies, daily seminars and project works.
Education coupled with discipline, dedication and diligence are the benchmarks that RGNUL has attained in a very short span of time of less than a year.The University is fast developing and had organised its own Moot court competition this year.
