The College is established by Devi Sharvani Education Society, registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860. It was founded by Late Mr. V. M. Salgaocar, an industrialist and philanthropist of Goa, for the people of Goa aspiring to obtain a Law Degree. The College earlier known as Mahadevrao Salgaocar College of Law was started in the year 1973 with the generous donation from its founder Late Mr. V. M. Salgaocar who named the college in the memory of his father Late Mr. Mahadevrao Salgaocar. In the year 1997, as per the decision of the Governing Council, the name of the College was changed to V.M. Salgaocar College of Law.
Located in Panaji, the capital city of Goa, V.M. Salgaocar College of Law came into existence in 1972. The college is among the prominent institutes of legal education in the state. It is affiliated to Goa University. The college intends to impart detailed knowledge to the scholars through moot-court room sessions, guest lectures of eminent law personnel, debate and discussion on controversial issues. With the approval of Bar Council of India (BCI), New Delhi, V.M. Salgaocar College of Law offers three and five year courses in the field of law, as undergraduate and integrated programs, respectively. Apart from this, the college also conducts two-year Master of Laws (LLM) course.

The candidates, who possess a bachelor’s degree in any field from a recognized university with at least 45% marks in total, are eligible.

The candidates with bachelors of law (LLB) degree in any field from a Bar Council of India and UGC recognized institution with not less than 50% aggregate marks are eligible.
Integrated:
LLB (Hons) (Five Year)
The candidates should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized Board, with minimum 45% aggregate marks.

Admissions are strictly based on merit.
